In the world of showbiz, Bollywood has also been affected to a great extent following the coronavirus outbreak, with cinemas shutting down, film promotions postponed, shootings halted and meetings delayed until further notice. Huge production companies such as Karan Johar’s Dharma have also closed doors until matters get better. The releases of some of this year’s big-budget films such as Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi have also been pushed indefinitely. While all of this has been done for the safety of people and to contain the spread of COVID-19, there is no naysaying that 2020 will not turn out to be the best of years for actors, choreographers, directors, cameramen and everyone who is a part of what is known as one of the biggest entertainment industries in the world. Here is a lowdown of the films that have been postponed indefinitely.
1. Sooryavanshi
Starring Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh and Katrina Kaif, Rohit Shetty’s highly-awaited cop drama has been postponed indefinitely. Initially slated to release on March 24, the makers of the film, Reliance Entertainment, have now delayed the release and rightly so! In an official statement Akshay shared, “Sooryavanshi is an experience that we have created for you with over a year of dedication and hard work and the response we received for its trailer was nothing less than electrifying and made it clear that this film truly belongs to its audience. We have been as excited as you are to present the film to you and your family, but due to the recent outburst of the COVID-19, we, the makers, have decided to postpone the release of your film Sooryavanshi, keeping in mind the health and safety of our beloved audience.” He continued, “Therefore, Sooryavanshi will be back for you just when the time is right. After all, safety comes first. Until then, keep the excitement alive, take good care of yourself and stay strong. We shall pull through this – Team Sooryavanshi.”
2. 83
Fans were fervently waiting to see the real-life jodi of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh making its way back to the big screen. However, the release date of 83 has been postponed due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Ranveer took to Instagram to announce the same. He wrote, “83 is not just our film but the entire nation’s film. But the health and safety of the nation always comes first. Stay safe, take care. We shall be back soon!” He posted an image that read, “83 is a film that fights against all odds and we hope we will bounce back from this soon.” The film was set to hit theatres on April 10. The Bollywood power couple has been posting pictures of themselves while in quarantine. Deepika posted images of cleaning her wardrobe and indulging in self-care. Well, we guess we’ll have to wait now!
3. Haathi Mere Saathi
The makers of Haathi Mere Saathi, featuring Rana Daggubati, have postponed the release date of the much-awaited adventure drama. The production team at Eros International announced delaying the film’s release date amid the coronavirus outbreak. “Eros International has always kept our audience’s interest at forefront as a core value. Healthy and happy audiences have always kept us motivated to produce and distribute unique stories that have never been told before. In light of unfortunate recent developments of COVID-19, our announcement regarding the scheduled release of Haathi Mere Saathi, Aranya and Kaadan stands changed. In solidarity with our partners, exhibitors, distributors and audiences, we pray for the health and happiness of all and as we are monitoring the situation, we do hope that we come back with a new release date soon. Stay healthy, safe and blessed.” The film also features Pulkit Samrat, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Zoya Hussain.
4. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar
Recently, Yash Raj Films announced that they are postponing the release of Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar too. The film stars Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles. Both the actors took to Twitter to announce the news. They wrote, “Given the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country, we have decided to postpone the release of Dibakar Banerjee’s Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. The health and safety of everyone is of utmost importance at this time.” Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar was slated to hit the theatres on March 20.
5. Takht

Acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar took to his social media handles last week to announce that his production house Dharma will be suspending operations for now. Posting on his official Instagram account, Karan uploaded an image of a notice sent out by Dharma. It read, “In view of the epidemic spread of the COVID-19 virus throughout the world including India, we at Dharma Productions have suspended all administrative and production work until further notice. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of all and we are complying with all the precautionary measures suggested by the government to minimize the risk of exposure to our cast, crew, workers and audience.” It added, “We wish for eevryone to stay strong and healthy in the fact of the ongoing global health crisis. We’ll see you at the movies soon.” The period saga was to be shot in Jaipur and Jaisalmer, however its schedule was cancelled because of the global health scare. Takht features an ensemble cast of A-lister actors including Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor.
6. Angrezi Medium
Starring Irrfan Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Radhika Madan, Angrezi Medium was touted as one of the most looked-forward to releases of 2020. It hit cinema screens on March 13 received raving reviews until cinemas throughout India and the rest of the world shut down indefinitely. Director Homi Adjania took to Twitter to announce that he will re-release his labour of love again when it’s safe in India. “At midnight all theatres will close across India till the authorities give us further notice. We will release #Angrezi Medium when it is safe to do so.”
7. Jersey

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor announced on Twitter that he has cancelled the filming of his sports drama Jersey in which he will be seen essaying a failed cricketer. “At a time like this it is our social responsibility to do everything in our capacity to curb the spread of this virus. Team #Jersey is suspending shoot so as to enable all unit members to be with their families and in the safety of their homes. Be responsible. Stay safe,” the actor posted on Twitter. The movie was scheduled to release in August this year. Whether or not the release date remains the same has not been confirmed yet.
The shooting schedules of Salman Khan’s Radhe – expected to be an Eid release – has also been postponed. However, the superstar will try his best to keep the release date the same. Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra had already been postponed, as Ayan Mukerji announced earlier. “We need time to get the VFX right, the sound music right and eventually the film right,” he posted on Instagram. It seems like the COVID-19 outbreak will result in the film being delayed even further now.
