GUWAHATI: The Assam State Jamiat Ulama (ASJU), a socio-religious body headed by Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal, has asked the state government to impose a temporary ban on the social media to prevent communal tension in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s final verdict in the Ayodhya land dispute case.
“The government should seriously think of banning the social media at least for four to five days post the verdict or maybe for more days depending on the situation. If the government feels necessary, it can also enforce the ban a few days ahead of the judgment. We strongly feel it will help in preventing rumour-mongering and stop vitiating the situation through communally charged remarks,” said ASJU secretary Maulana Fazlul Karim Quasimi.
He added that no one should be allowed to create law and order problems after the verdict is out.
“Whatever verdict the Supreme Court delivers, we have to accept it. Assam in particular and India in general is a melting pot of diverse religions, communities and cultures. We, as citizens of the country, have respect for the apex court’s verdict. No one should be allowed to vitiate the atmosphere through inflammatory and communally charged remarks, particularly on the social media,” said Ajmal, who is also the chief of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Quasimi said the government should also keep tabs on both the “Hindutva and Muslim fanatical” forces to pre-empt them from fomenting communal tension post the verdict.
“We have to maintain peace at all cost. Communal forces should not be allowed to use the verdict for creating trouble. Both Hindutva forces and Muslim fanatics should restrain from creating mistrust, leading to communal situation. The government should do its best to restrain these forces. We have utmost respect for the judiciary,” said Quasimi.
Violence broke out in different districts of the state in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition in December, 1992. At least 68 people were feared killed in different parts of the state in the violence.
