MUMBAI: After ED’s contention about Praful Patel, a member of the senior NCP leader’s family expressed shock and surprise over the way his name has been dragged into controversy. A ‘tenant’ in the Ceejay building redeveloped by Patel’s firm had sold it to Dawood Ibrahim aide Iqbal Mirchi, he claimed, and his family had nothing to do with it.
“It is unfortunate. There was no financial transaction in the entire episode and the Patel family was not associated with the transaction in any manner,” the person told TOI . The Patel family had bought the property on which Ceejay House now stands in Worli from the former Maharaja of Gwalior in 1963. It was with the court receiver from 1978 to 2005 due to a dispute among co-owners, and during this period there were a few illegal occupants on the premises behind the old building. After redevelopment, they were relocated by HC receiver’s order on the third floor. Ceejay House is not owned by any individual as has been stated in reports and all documents and court orders are available on record, the person added.
Elaborating on the litigation, the Patel family member said the illegal occupants were granted the status of tenants on the third floor. “One of the tenants was M K Mohamed, from whom Iqbal Mirchi purchased the property in 1985. As such it will be wrong to say that either Praful Patel or his family is associated with transaction,” he said.
